Abating Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs)

Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) continue to rise across the nation. Implementation of advancing technology must occur to decrease this problem. Any individual with a urinary catheter for greater than thirty days is at a large risk for developing bacteriuria. Bacteriuria increases the chances of developing a urinary tract infection. Using noble metal alloy lined catheters, we can change this. These catheters have a non-pharmacologic, non-toxic coating that creates a small charge. This micro current makes it much more difficult for bacteria to colonize in a catheter. Noble metal alloy catheters will decrease CAUTI rates in patients with chronic foley catheter.

We created a website to promote ethical awareness and responsibility among the Cal Poly Humboldt community. The recent housing decisions have raised ethical concerns, and our website offers resources for housing, transportation, mental health, and local community services. We believe that these issues, such as food and housing insecurities and environmental impacts like pollution and resource scarcity, are interconnected. Our website aims to provide necessary resources to help address these issues and promote environmental consciousness.

This study aims to address whether differences in spatial ability and memory will be found among those who have active lifestyles, inactive lifestyles, and those who play video games. Spatial ability was examined by having participants become familiarized and then tested on a 3-D computerized maze. Participants were tested on memory and spatial components when asked to recollect the spatial layout of the computerized map.

Affirmative action policies have been put into place to help women make the steps towards equality and hopefully amend prejudiced attitudes. The current study focuses on types of sexism and their relationship towards affirmative action support. It is hypothesized that higher scores on hostile and benevolent sexism will be associated with decreased support for affirmative action directed towards women. Community members in Northern California (N = 110) were measured. Measures include that of hostile, benevolent, and ambivalent sexism. Results indicate that only hostile sexism is potentially a key factor in determining whether individuals oppose affirmative action directed towards women.
Decreasing Non-Ventilator Hospital Acquired Pneumonia
Regina Taylor
Nursing
Undergraduate Student
College of Professional Studies
Evidence shows that patients who receive oral care two to four times daily, have their chances of acquiring non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) decreased by thirty-seven percent. To make this a successful program at our hospital, it would be prudent to create a policy for oral care, train nursing staff and patients of proper oral care and be sure to document in the electronic medical records that oral care has been done. Pneumonia is the number one hospital acquired infection. This information points to a greater need for nurses to perform oral care with patients.
How Moon Illumination, Cloud Cover, and Temperature Influence Capture Rates for Small Mammals
Shalom Fletcher
Wildlife
Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
This research project uses small mammal trapping data that was collected over the summer of 2021 on Green Diamond Resource Company land in Humboldt and Del Norte County. There was a total of 841 captures (nocturnal = 694, diurnal =147) over the course of 39 trap nights. Data was extracted and analyzed to determine if there was any correlation between moon illumination levels and capture rate success. This study uses diurnal species as a control, however both diurnal and nocturnal species may be influenced by temperature.

Presentation on a study conducted in Arcata, CA on the prevalence of an understudied virus in terrestrial isopods: Iridovirus. This study aimed to detect if there are associations among soil moisture level, density of potential isopod hosts, and/or temperature with the prevalence of Iridovirus. Across 7 study sites, a significant association was detected between soil moisture level and prevalence of Iridovirus, and density of potential isopod hosts and prevalence of Iridovirus.
