College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
'The Lark' is a Russian Folk Song most famously arranged by Russian Classical Composer Mikhail Glinka. Mily Balakirev later arranged this song as a piano work, inspired by other romantic era composers like Franz Liszt in the composition. The piece emulates the bird it is named after with its fluttering passages and a strong Russian presence.

Instructor evaluations are critical to the tenure process but are known to be biased with respect to gender (e.g. males are rated higher than females) and other identities (e.g. autism). This study aims to address the following question: Are male and female professors evaluated differently by male and female students when the professor’s autism identity is revealed compared to not revealed? This research highlights the impact of disclosing or failing to disclose one’s autism identity and its impact on student evaluations.

For ideafest we plan to enlighten our fellow Humboldtians on how Native tribes are helping to save the bison from extinction. Bison have played a key role in Native culture especially in the great plains . Their bison are like our salmon. The Sioux and Assiniboine tribes of Fork pecks currently have the largest restoration herd, with up to 340 bison living and thriving on their lands. We major in zoology and we decided to focus in on this subject because it is a clear bridge on how Indigenous people make connections between animals and their culture. Thereby, a connection between NAS and Zoology is born and recognized :) .
The Effects of Sleep Loss on Collegiate Athletic Performance

This project is on the effects of sleep loss on collegiate athletic performance. Specifically, I assess research on the influence of sleep deprivation and sleep restriction surrounding aerobic and anaerobic capacities, and cognitive and psychological function. Additionally, I synthesize research behind the reasoning of college athletes experiencing sleep loss disproportionately when compared to non-athletic counterparts. I also suggest further research, specifically, variables that may affect sleep loss in college athletes, and the possible effect of sleep extension on athletic performance.

College of Professional Studies
This project explored the psychological effects of weight management techniques on female athletes in weight-class sports. Drawing from personal experience in MMA and jiu-jitsu, I conducted a literature review to examine how weight cutting impacts mental health. Findings revealed high rates of anxiety, emotional burnout, disordered eating, and long-term distress. The research emphasizes the need for mental health support, athlete-centered interventions, and policy reform to protect female athletes from the unseen psychological costs of making weight.

This study examines media representations of the removal of the Klamath Dam, a development in Northern California's Indigenous land restoration efforts. Recognizing the historical underrepresentation of Indigenous voices in mainstream media, this research analyzes local coverage of the Klamath dam removal project by Humboldt County's leading news organizations: North Coast Journal, Times-Standard, and Lost Coast Outpost.

Personal narratives are powerful in garnering interest, empathy, and may improve attitudes on issues as compared to statistically oriented information, but have primarily been investigated in text-only formats. Little is known about the effects of visual information on individuals' attitudes.
This study aims to investigate the efficacy of presenting data, narrative information, or a combination of information through verbal or visual channels on individuals' attitudes. The implications of this study enables us to understand the most effective information presentation methods when influencing individuals' attitudes and actions on controversial and emotionally charged topics.

Combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills are widely used by women of reproductive age,
but there is still little conclusive evidence about their mood-related side effects. This meta-analysis examined the relationship between oral contraceptive use and mood effects such as depression and anxiety. The results of the meta-analysis suggest that COCs contribute to a small but significant improvement in women’s overall moods. However, methodological challenges and inconsistencies make it difficult for researchers to establish any firm conclusions about the role COCs play in mood changes.

The Archaeology Research Laboratory (ARL) and Biological Anthropology Research Center (BARC) at Humboldt State University maintain a teaching collection of faunal skeletal materials. This project will add examples of known taphonomic markers relevant to the Humboldt County area to the faunal collection. Faunal elements were deposited in nine unique burial conditions incorporating local earth materials and native plants. Elements will be recovered and accessioned in December 2019. This study provided valuable experience for undergraduate student participants and will add unique reference material to the ARL/ BARC collection.
