Seawater samples are to be measured for the iron concentration content. We measured standard samples to better understand what concentration ranges we could measure. We are currently working on optimizing the method to measure higher concentrations.
Behavioral Health Resource Booklet For Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

College of Professional Studies
My community project proposal mirrors what the youth in Humboldt County supervision, emergency monitoring, juvenile custody, ward, and non-ward probation, and their guardian(s) wish they knew, or want to reflect on. Resources for support and relevant information to navigate our legal system and improve our clients’ probabilities for success on the outside.
Vigilance Rates in Shorebirds in Marsh and Beach Habitat During the Non-Breeding Season

Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
A behavioral study on 5 common shorebirds of Humboldt County, CA during the non-breeding season; primarily on their vigilance rates in relation to different habitat types and disturbance categories. Two main habitats of marshland and beach habitats were compared with 3 sites chosen from the Arcata Marsh in Arcata and 2 beach habitats: Mad River Beach of Arcata and Centerville Beach of Ferndale. Shorebirds observed included Dunlin, Willets, Western Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers, and Short-billed Dowitchers with a total sample of 370 individuals. Focal studies were performed on defined vigilance behaviors for 2 minute segments per individual with 1 hour of study dedicated to each location.
The Effect of Grazing on Frog Abundance
Abigail Simon
Wildlife
Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
This study compares the abundance of frogs in landscapes that are grazed by livestock to lands that are non-grazed. This study found no influence of grazing activity on frog abundance. This information will be an important consideration for the conservation efforts of frog species as development of lands for urbanization and agriculture continue to increase as well as for conservation managers as they work to restore and maintain quality frog habitat by reverting agricultural lands back to native landscapes.
The JNK/c-Jun Pathway Regulates Potency and OCT4 Expression in Murine Embryonic Stem Cells
Lauren Dahl
Biological Sciences
Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
This study examines a role for the JNK/c-Jun pathway in stem cell potency, differentiation, and Oct4 expression. Oct 4 is a transcription factor known to regulate genes involved in embryonic stem cell (ESC) self-renewal, pluripotency, and differentiation. cJun is a protein that regulates genes responsible for cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Its transcriptional activity is regulated in part by its activator, JUN amino-terminal kinase (JNK). In this study we modulated JNK/cJun signaling in murine embryonic stem cells through both chemical modulation of the JNK pathway and transient transfection of vectors expressing GFP cJUN, GFP L40/42A, GFP cJun R54A or GFP alone.

Hummingbird Flower Use at the Humboldt Botanical Garden
Eliana Palomares

Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
My research investigated further into the feeding preferences of hummingbirds, particularly on individuals in the Humboldt Botanical Garden. I focused on how hummingbirds select flowers to feed on based on color, as well as how they select which garden patch they feed at.
HARNESSING THE POWER OF OPEN PEDAGOGY FOR COLLABORATIVE AND INNOVATIVE EDUCATION
Juergen
Riedelsheimer
Psychology
Graduate Student
College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
This presentation will explore how open pedagogy can transform students from passive knowledge consumers to active knowledge producers. The use of active learning approaches, which emphasize student-centered and collaborative learning, has been shown to improve learning outcomes and engagement. Project-based and experiential learning can equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply in real-world situations. This presentation will provide examples of successful implementations and discuss the challenges educators may face when moving towards a student-centered, knowledge-producing model.
