Today, as the Millennial Generation attend and complete college, enter the workforce and start their careers—research suggests that they are redefining the “traditional” values of individualism, entrepreneurship, and materialism that convey “success” in their chosen fields. The argument of this article is that the teaching of career preparation at the university level must also change. Therefore, this article will explore the question of how to teach “career” curriculum to a generation that arguably has very different values in the small, rural context of Humboldt State University.
Decolonizing Mentorship Programs

Other
In the past, efforts to create mentorship programs have been unsuccessful due to the tendency to place the needs of mentors before individuals who are being mentored. The purpose of this project was to lessen the paternalism in mentorship programs by providing space to discuss objectives and barriers for students who may then participate as mentees. Six open ended questions were designed in an effort to include student’s ideas on how to engage with student partners and provide a safe learning environment. Following the focus group, the information will be analyzed and delivered to mentors in the form of a powerpoint. This analysis will also be available to students for review and critique.
Redwood Coast Beer Trail

From the primitively-brewed ‘steam beer’ of 19th century Eureka taverns, to the nano-brewed Hazy DIPA in a Crescent City warehouse today -- brewing culture remains a key social element and economic driver in Northern California's Redwood Coast. The Redwood Coast Beer Trail is an experiential destination marketing campaign that applies the principles of gastrotourism to advertise the robust craft brewery scene of Humboldt and Del Norte counties as distinct tourism assets. The Redwood Coast Beer Trail poster is a self-guided, self-paced wayfinding aide that empowers local and non-local visitors to experience the unique oddities and attributes of the region’s craft beer and cider producers.
Combining Environmental Education with Music at Sunnybrae Middle School

My service learning project is with Sunnybrae Middle School at the after school program. I have spent the duration of the semester tutoring children in grades 6-8 and planning my activity. I am combining environmental education with music by obtaining a group of children in order to a discuss environmental topics and creating musical lyrics using that dialogue and an arrangement of instruments. The goal of this project is the inform the next generation about the importance of planetary health as well as human relationships to nature by touching on subjects such as pollution, oppression and ways in which one can make differences that will contribute to the creation of a more just world.

We have been working directly with the Humboldt County Historical Society over this past semester in an effort to offer them a way of gaining the community's attention and ultimately producing more members of the society. By making a Story Map, we offer the local communities in and around Eureka, California a way to digitally and physically make their way through Old Town Eureka so that they can compare the historical photos of the area to what is now there. We hope that this educates our local communities of the history that surrounds them, and encourages them to visit and support the Humboldt County Historical Society whenever and however they can.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Models of RO-PRO and FO-RO Hybrid Processes
Lori Jones

Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences
To address the two main issues of using reverse osmosis (RO) for desalination purposes (high energy demand and brine disposal), two hybrid systems have been proposed. One uses forward osmosis (FO) as pre-treatment while the other augments the RO step with pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO). To meaningfully compare the energy reductions from both systems, computational fluid dynamics models of the PRO and FO processes are being developed to encapsulate the complex geometries of the membrane modules and the system response to these geometries.
TCLT Internship Accomplishments

Trinidad Coastal Land Trust is the organization I am connected with for my service learning project. I am tasked with many responsibilities to complete while in the office. To list a few of the tasks that I have been assigned while interning with Trinidad Coastal Land Trust. Some of the tasks are website review and making sure google maps has the properties under the Trust correctly marked. Being an Environmental Studies major I can use my view in certain situations that come up during meetings to broaden the viewpoints and get to an understanding. I am in contact with multiple people with their own goals in mind and we make collaborative decisions to make TCLT better for the future.
Distribution of Western Thatching Ant Mounds and Their Effects on Soil Conditions in a Coastal Dune Ecosystem

Western thatching ant (Formica obscuripes) mounds are a conspicuous feature in the coastal beach pine forests of the local Lanphere and Ma-le’l Dunes. We explored the mounds’ size and spatial distributions, and tested whether their mound-forming behaviors could impact soil nutrient conditions. In a 3-km segment, we found 346 mounds generally situated along the sand–forest interface. Furthermore, from soil samples of seven of the mounds, we found that the ants significantly concentrated the soils with nutrients necessary for plant growth. These findings suggest that the ants could have important implications for supporting plant populations in this nutrient-poor environment.
Travessia (arr. Paulinho Nogueira) on Vibraphone

The song Travessia (1967) is the title track on brazilian singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento's first studio album. The portuguese title translates to "bridges," which Nascimento used to sum up the transition felt during heartbreak. In 1980, brazilian jazz guitarist Paulinho Nogueira played a version of the Travessia on solo guitar with an additional intro. I found the music to Nogueira's version but I there were two main challenges in playing it on vibraphone: I needed to transpose the piece from E to F and I needed to find a way to express six-note guitar chords with four mallets. This piece was an immense challenge, but that felt like a slight inconvenience compared the joy it gave me.

For our creative project we decided to create a poster explaining the relationionships between controled fires and forests. While participating in our Native American Studies class, we spoke breifly about how Native Americans used controlled fires to better the vegagtaion within their land. As biology (the study of life) and botnay (the study of plants) majors, the idea of controlled fires helping forests become more suitable for the life surronding it was an increcribly intresting topic for our research poster. Throughout our presentation we will be taking a closer look at how exactly controlled fires are able to help plants grow back stronger and healthier in the years after the fire.
