The Effects of Self-Determination Theory-Based Exercise Program for Individuals with Disabilities
Guadalupe Cruz, School of Applied Health Graduate Student
OtherThis research aims to explore the efficacy of using Social Determination Theory (SDT) principles with an exercise program for individuals with disabilities. The SDT theoretical framework highlights the importance of social environments to support individuals' basic psychological needs such as autonomy, relatedness, and competence as it relates to exercise motivation. In the study, the researcher measured the exercise performance of an adult with Down Syndrome during a 6-week program hosted at a recreation facility in Northern California. The independent variables measured included walking, modified push-ups, and curl-ups.
The effects of simulated acid rain on web-spinning spiders in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico
- Yuliana Rowe-GaddyWildlifeUndergraduate Student
Our objective of this study was to assess the effects of simulated acid rain on web-spinning spider assemblages in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, and we hypothesized that acid rain would decrease the richness and abundance of web-spinning spider taxa. Spiders are an ideal bioindicator to study the effects of anthropogenic pollutants due to their abundance, position as apex predators, various foraging behaviors and the feasibility in collecting them. In our field experiment, quadrats were sprayed with water of varying pH levels. After the treatments, all web-spinning spiders in the quadrats were collected and identified and results were statistically analyzed.
The Effects of Sleep Loss on Collegiate Athletic Performance
Grace Rosebrook, School of Applied Health Undergraduate Student
College of Professional StudiesThis project is on the effects of sleep loss on collegiate athletic performance. Specifically, I assess research on the influence of sleep deprivation and sleep restriction surrounding aerobic and anaerobic capacities, and cognitive and psychological function. Additionally, I synthesize research behind the reasoning of college athletes experiencing sleep loss disproportionately when compared to non-athletic counterparts. I also suggest further research, specifically, variables that may affect sleep loss in college athletes, and the possible effect of sleep extension on athletic performance.
The Effects of Tribal Water Rights on Forestry Practices
- Colleen SloanForestryUndergraduate Student
The United States, on behalf of numerous Native American tribes, brought action against the State of Washington, alleging that the State violated the fishing clause of the Stevens Treaties by building and maintaining barrier culverts that prevented salmon movement along rivers. This poster will show the effect of the 'right to fish' on tribal water rights and the lasting effects of these factors on forestry practices, especially road building.
The Effects of Water Temperature on Bluebird Hermit Crab (Pagurus samuelis) Behavior
Maddy Frost, Wildlife Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & SciencesThis study investigates how water temperature influences Blueband hermit crab behavior from 4 different sites ranging from Southern to Northern California.
The emotional response to social gaze is a domain specific cognitive mechanism
- Ethan GahtanPsychologyFaculty
- Nathaniel LapollaPsychologyUndergraduate Student
- Benjamin BishopPsychologyUndergraduate Student
Eye contact with another person (social gaze) produces a reflexive emotional responses measurable using skin conductance (SCR). A ‘domain specificity’ model of the social gaze response mechanism was tested by comparing SCRs during social and 'self-gaze' (gazing at one’s own eyes in a mirror). Domain specificity (versus generality) predicts responses only during social gaze and has theoretical implications for how this reflex evolved. Participants (N=76) completed ten, 20 second, social or self-gaze trials. Social gaze produced significantly greater mean SCR’s and showed more habituation across trials. There were no effects of sex or sex match on gaze-evoked SCRs. Results support domain speci
The Employment Landscape and Certification Success Rates for HSU Accounting Graduates
- Josh ZenderBusinessFaculty
- Hannah ShapiroBusinessUndergraduate Student
This study outlines the results of a survey undertaken at Humboldt State University to examine factors that are associated with an undergraduate accounting student obtaining a job offer and passing the CPA exam. Undertaking relevant part-time work, academic performance and social (extra-curricular) activities are significant factors leading to job offers prior to graduation, as well as success on the CPA exam. Participation in part-time professional work was not found to negatively affect students’ academic performance.
The Evology of Addiction
- Anais SouthardEnvironmental StudiesUndergraduate Student
This research explores popular discourse regarding the “opiate epidemic” and deconstructs the ways in which popular conceptions of addiction and addicts shapes the care that that people recieve. By looking at the systemic causes of addiction, this research also examines the links between addiction, environmental justice, rurality, and the many facets of systemic oppression.
The Feminist Pedestal: Ronda Rousey and the Representation of Female Athletes
- Karissa ValineDepartment of CommunicationUndergraduate Student
- Michael S. BrunerDepartment of CommunicationFaculty
This article will explore the feminist self-identification of female athletes in addition to critiquing the harms and benefits of placing female athletes on a “feminist pedestal.” Ronda Rousey, a well-known athlete in mixed martial arts, will serve as a case study in the analysis.
The Fun Factor: A case for focusing on fun and enjoyment in Physical Activity
Dorian DeNisi, School of Applied Health Undergraduate Student
College of Professional StudiesAs part of this semester's Kinesiology Students' Senior Seminar, I will be presenting my research on why we should emphasize having fun in our physical activity, over traditional exercise regimens.
