Personal narratives are powerful in garnering interest, empathy, and may improve attitudes on issues as compared to statistically oriented information, but have primarily been investigated in text-only formats. Little is known about the effects of visual information on individuals' attitudes. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of presenting data, narrative information, or a combination of information through verbal or visual channels on individuals' attitudes. The implications of this study enables us to understand the most effective information presentation methods when influencing individuals' attitudes and actions on controversial and emotionally charged topics.
The Impacts of Soy on Patients with Hyperthyroidism
- Kelly WheelockKinesiologyUndergraduate Student
- Jake SmithKinesiologyGraduate Student
Soy has become increasingly popular over the years. There have been both positive and negative benefits to consuming soy known to date. We aimed to show how the consumption of soy, particularly the phytoestrogen isoflavones components, affects patients with hyperthyroidism. Soy isoflavones are similar in both structure and function to human estrogen and can bind to mammalian estrogen receptors. This can create either estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. Hyperthyroidism is commonly influenced by estrogen activity so our study aimed to show how consuming soy can be beneficial.
The Impacts of the Boldt Decision
- Skarlet MoralesFisheries BiologyUndergraduate Student
In 1974, Federal District George Boldt granted a 50/50 share of salmon and steelhead fisheries for tribes and commercial fishermen, as well as co-manager statues over their natural recourses. My poster is going to cover the regulations this decision established for both local fisheries and surrounding waters of the Puget Sound.
The importance of covariate spatial factors in building growth models for old growth sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana) in the Sierra Nevada.
- Andrew W. SlackForestry and Wildland ResourcesGraduate Student
A century of fire exclusion in the Sierra Nevada has altered the structure and composition of many old-growth forests. As a result many older sugar pines (Pinus lambertiana) are more prone to mortality due to uncharacteristically severe wildfire, pathogens and insect outbreaks, drought, and competition-induced stress, and many of these factors are exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. Examining tree growth is an excellent approach to understanding the influence of these factors on sugar pine vigor and survival. This study is a preliminary analysis to understand the importance spatial factors such as slope and distance to creek as covariates in building growth models for sugar pine.
The Importance of Soil Analysis Concerning Ancient Civilizations
- Timothy OrtegaAnthropologyUndergraduate Student
Human activities leave an impact on everything, including deep in the soil. This soil then can be tested thousands of years later to help determine what activities occurred at the site for a culture that may have been lost, is barely known about, or left no evidence other than their footprint in the dirt. I will relate my experience as an intern in the Archaeology Lab on campus to this project, which also concerns soil analysis from someone else's project.
The Importance of Stretching Everyday
- Ahmad ShahCommunicationsUndergraduate Student
For this assignment/project, I wanted to create a poster that information, relatable, and quick. When you see a poster, you kind of have to soak it all in at once. It isn’t moving or talking to give you the bigger picture of what it is. You just have to look and kind of go with it however you like. That is why I wanted something that was grounded to Earth, quick, and knowledgeable. I wanted to do an awareness poster on The Importance of Stretching. The importance of stretching is something that is overlooked in our daily lives because individuals are wrapped up in their everyday busy lives. I cannot blame them, so am I!
The Indian Health Service and the Sterilization of Native American Women
- Emily SuarezBiologyUndergraduate Student
- Yazmin ChamuBiologyUndergraduate Student
In the 1960’s, the Indian Health Service (IHS) introduced and provided native american women different methods of birth control. The US government agency personnel, including the IHS, targeted native americans due to their high birth rate. As opposed to popular belief, native women were often subsidized and used as test subjects with the goal of population control under the American Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW.) This lead to an abundance of native women becoming sterilized by their physician without their consent.
The Indigenous Effort to Protect Eagles
- Lilli LeVanWildlifeUndergraduate Student
- Mary LehmanWildlifeUndergraduate Student
Native Tribes have been and continue to be an instrumental part in the protection of eagles throughout the United States. Due to their work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and researchers, they have made substantial progress in furthering their conservation areas and techniques to protect the different species of eagles from extinction. These initiatives are depicted by the Eagle Summits that have been held, as well as eagle rehabilitation areas created on tribal land. Through my research, I will be educating attendees on the work of the tribes to conserve eagle populations and rehabilitate injured eagles while continuing their cultural traditions within the Midwest.
The Indigenous Influence on Komodo Dragon Research and Conservation
- Cesar AguilarWildlife Conservation BiologyUndergraduate Student
I will be exploring the history and involvement of indigenous people from the islands of Indonesia focusing on the conservation and research of Komodo Dragons. My poster will go into depth of the history and culture that surrounds the giant reptiles of the islands, focusing on the traditional ecological knowledge and the impacts it has had and how it is changing still to this day.
The Influence of Hiking Trails on Salamanders
- Emily MacDonaldWildlifeUndergraduate Student
It is a field research project looking at the species diversity and individual abundance of salamanders in the Arcata Community Forest.
