Menopause is a physical, psychosocial, and cultural transition as diverse and complicated as humans themselves. Every person with ovaries who lives long enough will experience the fluctuation and decline of sex hormones, and about 80% will have symptoms likely to start earlier and be wider-ranging than expected. In this proposed project at a rural health clinic, annual screening will be offered to patients aged 35-55 years. Patient replies will result in offering resources, registered nurse consults and classes, and focused provider visits. Directly addressing perimenopause allows for anticipatory guidance and shared decision-making to improve quality of life in middle-age and beyond.

Youth Developmental Program: Captain John High School in Hoopa, CA

We are supporting the Youth Developmental Program research and outcomes at Captain John Continue High School in Hoopa. Two Feathers provides and funded these Native American Family Services located all over Humboldt County schools and systems utilizing tribal best practices as their main guidance to a balanced community. This program runs work pods, weaving circles, drumming circles, and LGBTQ+2Spirits talking circles. They advocate and collaborate with all Two Feathers clinicians, school administrators, school counselors, programs, and resources that provide share career & college opportunities, cultural interventions, and lastly expand the connection to nature and community. Youth in Motion: Sunset Kayak

My project is an event that celebrates how outdoor recreation can connect youth to the land, to our communities, and ourselves. This will be a free private kayaking event at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center on May 6th, and aims to support transition age foster youth through a free community building experience. All transportation, gear, and food will be provided at no cost to the participants, and will be funded by various grants and donations from our stakeholders. The event will be hosted by Center Activities at Cal Poly Humboldt and California Youth Connections, and will be open to members of Elite Scholars and the Humboldt County Transition Age Youth Committee (HCTAYC).

Youth Outdoor Resilience-Building Experiences Pilot: Planning, Implementation and Program Evaluation with Big Lagoon School

During the academic year 2018-2019, Big Lagoon School was awarded a grant from the Alexander T. Salvos & Timothy A. Salvos Fund for Youth of Humboldt Area Foundation, which provided the opportunity to formalize the Outdoor Resilience-Building Experiences pilot program, an intervention for creatively addressing the need for more behavioral and social-emotional supports with youth in rural schools. This was an IRB-approved study measuring student resilience outcomes with self-regulation skills, mindfulness, and empowering access to the county's natural surroundings for participants grades 4-7. Findings will help the program test effectiveness and sustainability.

Youth Voices Matter

In partnership with the Yurok Tribe, this project seeks the opinions of Yurok extended foster care and aged-out foster youth about their experiences, their needs, and their opinions on how services can be improved and ideas for future programing for Tribal foster youth. This project will produce a report that highlights common themes found in the interviews, insightful input and ideas for improvement provided by the participants. As the ICWA Department and the Tribal Court continue to design programing for youth and refine existing programs, the hope is that this final report will provide useful information that will help them in program design and improvements over time.

Yurok Social Services Internship Manual

College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

I’ve partnered with the Yurok Social Services (YSS) department to develop the Yurok Social Services Internship Manual. As the largest federally recognized tribe in California with over 6000 enrolled members, interns placed within YSS have an opportunity to learn from and be exposed to a diverse community with varied Indigenous, Yurok worldview(s). The Yurok Tribe continues to suffer from the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism, and as Indigenous peoples, they have also continued to thrive. The intent of this manual is to better orient and train incoming interns as to their roles and responsibilities as well as to provide an introduction to a Yurok worldview.

Yurok Wellness Court Professional Training

Our finished project is a recorded video training, approximately one hour long. We gave a copy of the training to the Yurok Wellness Court. We also gave a copy of the slides to the Yurok Wellness Court, so that they may conduct their own live training using our materials.

Zooarchaeology 3D Digitization

College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

Our research project consists of photographing animal remains and combining the photos to make digital 3D models which will later be used for student education for those who do not have direct hands-on access to these materials. To provide accurate models to be studied, photographs are taken of each bone 360 degrees around and stitched together using a program called STRATA 3D. The purpose of this project is to make our zooarchaeology collection available to the public while also ensuring that the remains will not be damaged. By incorporating the use of STRATA 3D, current and future students of Humboldt State University will be able to access this database for years to come.

~OG~ Organic Guru ~ Humboldt Homegrown Handmade and Fair Trade ~ Sustainable Village Project

Organic Guru is an organic food company and sustainable village. The food company replaces Sysco, and US Foods as a restaurant and small market supply, supplying Humboldt's restaurants, schools and general population with organic food. The profits in turn support a sustainable/ecovillage which provide quality sustainable housing such as tee pee's, yurts, for either permeant or transitional housing. allowing for a large segment of the population to have food shelter clothing and income. We also have planned to create a product line of food to sell at the retail stores, and restaurants, such as kombucha, teas, superfood cookies, pasta sauces. Like Newmans own.

'The Lark' is a Russian Folk Song most famously arranged by Russian Classical Composer Mikhail Glinka. Mily Balakirev later arranged this song as a piano work, inspired by other romantic era composers like Franz Liszt in the composition. The piece emulates the bird it is named after with its fluttering passages and a strong Russian presence.
