Grieg Piano Sonata in E minor
- Owen ReissMusicUndergraduate Student
Grieg wrote his only piano sonata early in his life, when he was still learning how to be a composer. It is an imperfect work, but very emotional and passionate. I play only the first movement, Allegro moderato.
Grow Gardens not Grass
- Katrina Salinasenvironmental studiesUndergraduate Student
My Environmental Studies Capstone experience has been through service learning at the Pacific Union Garden Project. Through this service learning I have partnered with a variety of elementary aged children and teachers to incorporate environmental education in a garden setting. The use of rainwater catchment systems, compost and worm bins have been used to educate children on the importance of water, soils, and the regenerative cycle of life. This project will show how children interact and gain skills in a garden and why school gardens are important to children's education as a starting point for environmental education inspiration.
Growing Up On This Side Of The Mountain
- Jacob D. ImlayEnglish First-Year Writing ProgramUndergraduate Student
My project contains a list of a few selected free-style poems that I've combined to make a short poetry book that discusses how literacy sponsors have affected my academic worldview, and how their influences have affected my opportunities inside different academic communities and academic fields. Also how literacy sponsors impact everyone's development inside of the academic world as well.

Habitat Edge Impacts on Predators in the Arcata Community Forest
Megan Singer, Wildlife Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & SciencesPredators play a crucial role in ecosystem processes within various habitat types. My study aimed to analyze the impact of habitat edges on predators in the Arcata Community Forest by using remote camera traps to document predator presence in edge versus interior habitat sites. I also conducted supplemental vegetation surveys to compare the mean vegetation density at edge versus interior habitat sites. I predicted that if predator presence is influenced by habitat type and vegetation density, then predator presence would be higher at edge habitat sites than interior habitat sites, and there would be a negative correlation between predator presence and vegetation density.
Habitat Preferences and Distribution Patterns of Salamanders In the Arcata Community Forest
Tristan Ray, Wildlife Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & SciencesThis study investigates the spatial distribution and habitat preferences of plethodontid salamanders within the Arcata Community Forest in Humboldt County, California. By examining salamander abundance in relation to surface water proximity and soil moisture content during the winter-spring period, I aim to identify key environmental factors influencing their distribution. This research highlights the importance of understanding seasonal variations and the complex interrelationships between salamanders and their habitat within diverse forest ecosystems.
Habitat Selection of American Crows in Eureka, CA
Christina Parra, Wildlife Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & SciencesI looked at habitat selection of crows within the city of Eureka. I conducted point count surveys to compare the number of crows within residential/commercial areas (urban) and park areas to see which habitat type crows prefer.
Habitat Selection of Black Bears Based on Heavy to Light Vegetation
- Logan ScherfWildlifeGraduate Student
A research project that investigates what type of habitat black bears choose when it comes to vegetation density.
Habitat Selection of Mule Deer in Northern California Coastal Ecosystem
- Arthur IngrhamWildlifeUndergraduate Student
Determining if Mule deer select a specific habitat type in a Northern California ecosystem.
Habitat Selection of Northern Harriers in Grasslands and Coastal Wetlands in Humboldt County, CA
Riley Sullivan, Wildlife Undergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & SciencesHabitat selection is a well-studied behavior that strongly influences how a species interacts with the surrounding ecosystem. Countless studies address the habitat selection of raptors in the interest of conservation, but the habitat preferences and selection of the Northern Harrier specifically are poorly studied. I conducted a series of point counts between the Arcata Bottoms and the Arcata Marsh to compare the rate of Northern Harrier sightings between each zone.
