Humboldt County Unmanned Aircraft Systems Youth Education Training Program

This project is led by David Marshall and Tamara Barriquand with the help of HSU student facilitators. The project is a Native American youth outreach program designed to encourage STEM through the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), known as drones. This four week summer program guides high school students through a ground pilot school that will earn them a FAA UAS Pilot's License, while also providing presentations, tutorials and activities related to aviation, environmental and applied sciences, and GIS. One goal of the program is to help underrepresented communities earn a pilot's license that can introduce them to new career opportunities in a variety of fields.

In spite of the initial challenges the students from the U.S. and India faced in an international experiential learning program, they reported benefits including cultural and social learning, understanding different perspectives, gaining communication skills, improvement in reflective skills, and improved self-efficacy.

The Swan is the 13th movement of the 'The Carnival of the Animals' by Camille Saint-Saëns. Also known as 'Le Cygne' in French, this is one of the most famous cello works originally scored for cello accompanied by two pianos. Like the animal it is named after, this is a very graceful and elegant piece. For this performance, my classmate Aaron Lopez is accompanying me on piano while I am playing the cello.

The Gravity Lab at Humboldt State is concerned with measuring the force of gravity at unprecedented distance scales. Theories new and old make predictions about how gravity should behave, but accurate measurements of gravitational forces between objects close together have remained challenging. The crux of the experiment lies in sufficiently silencing the non-gravitational forces acting at the measuring site, and accomplishing this requires applying at least a little knowledge from most undergraduate physics classes. The implications of progress in this lab make it exciting to a general audience while remaining beneficial from an undergraduate learning perspective.

You are invited to participate in this survey if you are a student at HSU and live on campus. Your part in this study involves responding to a 10-minute online survey on Survey Monkey about your current participation in physical activity and community engagement. Your participation in this study is voluntary. Risks and Benefits: There are minimal possible risks involved for participants. You may feel uncomfortable answering questions about your physical activity participation.

RAMP Up Your Courage (RUYC) events were facilitated by peer mentors employed by the First-Year Retention through Academic Mentoring Program (FY-RAMP) and the Major Based Peer Mentoring - Retention through Academic Mentoring Program (MBPM-RAMP). It takes courage to explore academic identities. RUYC was intended to empower students to examine emerging academic identities by connecting them with the MBPM mentors of the same major. By leveraging existing relationships between FY-RAMP and the freshmen whom they serve, as well as partnering FY-RAMP with MBPM-RAMP for the presentations, a bridge was built between the two mentoring programs, benefitting both mentors and students they serve.

Redwood Roots is a community platform that serves to provide a direct, diverse, and transparent narrative that further encourages communal collaborations between students, alumni, faculty, and community partners. Redwood Roots highlight the diverse approaches HSU students engage in by combining learning objectives with community.
