- Ashley TorresEnvironmental StudiesUndergraduate Student
This project aims to demonstrate to educators about students being a product of their own environment by observing the Humboldt Office of Education’s-Court Community Schools’ classroom environments. These observations will be compared to a variety of different learning styles that work best with at-risk youth. Bridging the Gap: Environmentalism & the Military
- Samantha WeeksEnvironmental StudiesUndergraduate Student
The United States military has a long and well documented history of environmental degradation, contamination, and environmental injustice. Today, the U.S. military has taken steps to attempt control, regulation, and conservation in a growing environmental sector. Current relations between environmentalists and military personnel are still plagued with contention. This has created a stigma on bases about environmentalists and their contributions to military base lives. By reconciling my knowledge of the military and the environment with the tools of an environmental studies major I hope to show ways in which we can improve the relationship with the military and environment.

Bring Back the Bison
- Paige LindnerZoologyUndergraduate Student
- Queen Juarez-WardZoology/BotanyUndergraduate Student
For ideafest, we plan to enlighten our fellow Humboldtians on how Native tribes are helping to save the bison from extinction. Bison have played a key role in Native culture, especially in the great plains . The Sioux and Assiniboine tribes of Fork pecks currently have the largest restoration herd, with up to 340 bison living and thriving on their lands. We major in zoology, so we decided to focus in on this subject because we are passionate about the wellbeing of animals and it is a clear bridge between Indigenous people, animals, and their culture. Thereby, a connection between NAS and Zoology is born and recognized :) .

HSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) promotes student well-being by making individual counseling and support groups free and easily accessible to students, which combats the widespread stigma associated with mental health services. As part of the campaign to improve student mental health, CAPS maintains an expansive website with a variety of self-help resources. Our team of Abnormal Psychology students collaborated with CAPS to increase website accessibility by updating slideshow presentations to comply with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA enforces access to civil life for people living with disabilities and, as relevant to this case, requires slideshow
