Camp Hall Project Proposal

LibraryCamp Hall is an idea for a summer camp-esque program that could be hosted at the Vet’s Hall for elementary aged children. It would take place over the course of a few days and would not be overnight. Veterans/Fellows would be encouraged to participate in the camp and share things like crafts, basic survival skills, story telling, gardening, cooking, and science/exploration themed activities.
Campus Readiness Assessment: Tobacco and Smoke-Free Policy at Humboldt State Unviersity

In 2016, Governor Jerry Brown received a bill (AB 1594) authored by assembly member McCarthy requesting the prohibition of smoke & tobacco use on all Calfornia college and university campuses. However, Gov. Brown vetoed the bill and stated that the governing boards of public colleges and universities have the authority to revise their own smoke & tobacco policies as needed. Therefore, an online survey was developed to assess the community's readiness to adopt a 100% smoke & tobacco-free policy. The goal of this project is to provide the Humboldt State University governing board with a glimpse of public opinion regarding the possible implementation of a smoke and tobacco-free policy.

Candidate Landing Sites for Artemis 3 in Two NASA Candidate Landing Regions Nearest The Lunar South Pole

This REU focuses on a landing site for the Human Landing System for the NASA Artemis III mission. This poster is complete with a full abstract and pictures of two of the best candidate sites via satellite imaging from NASA and Arizona State University databases. The sites were chosen based on a list of criteria that must be met inside previously chosen landing site regions near the Lunar South Pole that we're set by NASA.

Humboldt County is home to a uniquely large and diverse Cannabis industry comprised of a variety of operation styles, leading to different associated energy intensities and carbon emissions. This project aimed to deploy a detailed, accessible carbon accounting model for Cannabis operations - one which is adaptable to various operation styles and industry practices. Our Cannabis Carbon Accounting Model, is a fully-functional user-friendly tool for the rapid assessment of Cannabis operations carbon footprints. Understanding the extent of Cannabis operation emissions and their source will allow governments, businesses, and the general public to find ways to lower their environmental impact.
Cannabis Cultivation: An Analysis of Humboldt County's Cultivation Regulation on Cannabis and the Affects on the Yurok Tribe

This poster will show Humboldt County’s regulation and cultivation of Cannabis species nearby the Yurok tribe’s reservation boundary and Klamath River, and the effect it has on the Yurok tribe’s water rights in relation to California’s recent legalization of Cannabis.

Our project entails researching the effects of cannabis on various mental illnesses. We are investigating whether cannabis use impacts mental health disorders—exacerbating them, providing relief, or having no effect—aiming to better understand its role and clinical implications. Using OneSearch through Cal Poly Humboldt Library, we reviewed 12 papers utilizing keywords like “mental illness,” “cannabis,” “anxiety,” and “depression.” Findings show cannabis may worsen symptoms depending on usage patterns and individual conditions, suggesting the need for caution and increased research in clinical use and mental health policy.
Cannabis Use and Mood on Creativity

This study examines the relationship between cannabis use (infrequent, moderate, and heavy use) and one’s mood (neutral, positive, and negative) on the Alternative Use Task (AUT). Although both mood and cannabis may influence creativity independently, not much is known about their interactive effects. Creativity was measured by the number of alternative uses for common objects produced by the participants. The AUT was followed by a survey that included cannabis use frequency and the Creative Achievement Questionnaire, which has been shown to represent an individual’s creative ability across multiple mediums.
Capstone Workbook: Leaders, Leadership and Career Skills

This project will build on the experience of the International Studies Capstone class by taking material used in previous courses and adding active learning exercises that will help students develop leadership and career skills. Each section within the workbook would be free-standing, enabling both students and faculty to use this as a resource outside the context of this specific course or major. The learning outcome of the workbook will be to encourage students to both reflect on, and create their own leadership approach and apply that to their post-university career plans. The overall goal of this project is the creation of an open source, practical classroom tool.
Carbohydrate phloem loading mechanism in Nicotiana tabacum via the downregulation of sucrose transporter 1

College of Natural Resources & SciencesFood security has become a growing concern as we look to the future. Having a thorough understanding of plant functioning can help predict effects brought to crops under a changing climate. This study seeks to better understand the carbohydrate phloem loading mechanism in Nicotiana tobacum by intentionally downregulating the sucrose transporter gene (SUT1). The phloem loading mechanism transports sugars and amino acids from photosynthetic sites to conducting sieve tubes. Such a process is essential for plant growth, storage, and cellular function. N. tobacum resembles those of major crops, and can be used as a model species for addressing food security concerns in other favorable crops.
