Miné Okubo: Art as Social Commentary and Cultural Expression

This poster explores the life and art of Miné Okubo, highlighting her experiences as an artist and her commitment to using art as a tool for social commentary and cultural expression. Okubo's journey is traced from her early artistic training with Fernand Léger in Paris to her internment in the Topaz camp during World War II and her subsequent artistic endeavors.

During the pandemic, students experience a series of academic, structural, social, and personal stressors. For example, some students experienced abrupt closure of colleges and universities; some students’ households did not have access to needed resources such as an internet connection, and limited resources for remote online learning. Students of color experience these stressors in addition to ethnic minority stress which may have been exacerbated because of the current social climate. The current study examined associations between minority student achievement stress on self-esteem and academic sense of belonging and the possible moderating effects of challenge-focused stress appraisals.
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

When Oliphant v. Suquamish was passed it completely changed the paradigm in rape cases. It created a legal loophole for perpetrators to escape without punishment due to a jurisdictional power shift to federal governance. This allows more sexual assaults and abductions on reservations because there is not readily accessible or adequate repercussions for the behavior of rapists. The exploitation of mother earth’s resources can be related to the violation and objectification of Native American bodies as both were violated by the settler state.
MMA Corrective Bilateral Imbalance Study

College of Professional StudiesMuscular imbalances are common in mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and can decrease performance and increase injuries. This study aims to investigate the effects of fixing muscular imbalances of MMA fighters. The experiment will consist of 20 MMA fighters assigned to either an intervention group or control group. The intervention group will receive an 8-week program targeting their muscular imbalances. Pre- and post-intervention measures will be assessed. This research highlights the importance of addressing muscular imbalances in MMA fighters to improve their overall performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Mock Codes, Emergent Scenarios, Nursing Confidence and Team Performance

Critical care nurses specialize in caring for human responses to life-threatening problems. Nursing confidence in codes has shown direct correlation in improved patient outcomes, reduced time to compressions and adherence to American Heart Association guidelines. Currently, in a high-acuity critical care unit in Northern California, mock code scenarios and simulations are not a common practice. A quality improvement program is being developed to improve resuscitation efforts on this unit. It will include a self-assessment, mock codes and emergency scenario days. The goal is to increase nursing and staff confidence in resuscitation efforts, as well as improve team performance.

Modification of Turbulent Pipe Flow Equations to Estimate the Vertical Velocity Profiles Under Woody Debris Jams

Large woody debris (LWD) in rivers can increase fish and macroinvertebrate habitat, but also increases the risk of flooding and reduces channel navigability. This research aims to better understand the river hydraulics associated with LWD in order to find a balance between the beneficial and detrimental effects. By modifying equations of turbulent pipe flow, we attempt to estimate the vertical velocity profile of flow under LWD jams and compare the estimated profile to measured profiles from flume-simulated LWD jams.
Molecular and Serological detection of Rickettsia species Phylotype G022 and R. tillamookensis in Dogs

Ixodes pacificus, a common human biting tick, vectors Rickettsia species phylotype G022 (G022) and Rickettsia tillamookensis. Both species shares an evolutionary lineage with known rickettsial pathogens and have a low prevalence in I. pacificus. Recently the incidence of rickettsial diseases has increased, along with vector borne diseases (VBD). Between 2004-2016 a total of 491,671 cases of tick-borne diseases were reported in the United States (76% of all VBD). The pathogenicity of G022 and R. tillamookensis has never been documented. Here we report that G022 and R. tillamookensis have the capacity to be horizontally transmitted to mammals.
Monitoring the Gonadal Maturation of Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout using Ultrasonic Imaging

Ultrasonography is a versatile and noninvasive method that can be used to examine the internal anatomy, gonadal maturation, and the reproductive status of various freshwater and marine fishes. The goal of our study is to examine the feasibility of using ultrasound images to sex and determine oocyte maturation for Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Cutthroat Trout (O. clarkii) at the Humboldt State University Fish Hatchery. The objectives were to: (1) determine the most applicable control setting, (2) differentiate between a male and female, and (3) monitor oocyte maturation using ultrasound images. We were able to successfully identify the sex and determine gonadal maturation of fish.
