Millennials' Redefinition of "Career"
- Magdalena MartinezInternational StudiesUndergraduate Student
- Alison HolmesInternational StudiesFaculty
- Loren CollinsAcademic & Career AdvisingFaculty
Today, as the Millennial Generation attend and complete college, enter the workforce and start their careers—research suggests that they are redefining the “traditional” values of individualism, entrepreneurship, and materialism that convey “success” in their chosen fields. The argument of this article is that the teaching of career preparation at the university level must also change. Therefore, this article will explore the question of how to teach “career” curriculum to a generation that arguably has very different values in the small, rural context of Humboldt State University.

- Justina MadrigalHSU LibraryUndergraduate Student
- Amelia TowseHSU LibraryUndergraduate Student
The Brain Booth initiative is an innovative project promoting mindfulness and contemplative pedagogy as a means of introducing metacognition for academic success. The Brain Booth is an informal, experiential space to learn about the mind body connection, reduce stress, and optimize learning. It is open to all HSU students, staff, and faculty as well as community members. In the last academic year, 1,000+ students took a brain break in the Brain Booth, and the Brain Booth was embedded across the colleges curricula in 5 departments and 8 courses.
Mindfulness: A physiological examination of mediation and alternate states of conciousness
- Raleigh TomlinsonBiologyUndergraduate Student
From Tibetan monks to college students in the U.S., meditation is a practice that has transcended cultural barriers and has been in existence for thousands of years. In addition to waking, dreaming, and non-dreaming, Davidson (1976) describes the practice of transcendental meditation (TM) as a fourth state of consciousness (as cited in Kanellakos & Lukas, 1974). This is due to the studies with brain wave lengths and EEGs that show what areas of the mind are being activated during meditation. My study will be a literature review of: the physiological changes during meditation, brain activity during meditation, and current clinical applications.

During the pandemic, students experience a series of academic, structural, social, and personal stressors. For example, some students experienced abrupt closure of colleges and universities; some students’ households did not have access to needed resources such as an internet connection, and limited resources for remote online learning. Students of color experience these stressors in addition to ethnic minority stress which may have been exacerbated because of the current social climate. The current study examined associations between minority student achievement stress on self-esteem and academic sense of belonging and the possible moderating effects of challenge-focused stress appraisals.
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
- Lily DownsCollege of Arts, Humanities, and Social StudiesUndergraduate Student
When Oliphant v. Suquamish was passed it completely changed the paradigm in rape cases. It created a legal loophole for perpetrators to escape without punishment due to a jurisdictional power shift to federal governance. This allows more sexual assaults and abductions on reservations because there is not readily accessible or adequate repercussions for the behavior of rapists. The exploitation of mother earth’s resources can be related to the violation and objectification of Native American bodies as both were violated by the settler state.
MMA Corrective Bilateral Imbalance Study
Aubert Marcu, School of Applied Health Undergraduate Student
College of Professional StudiesMuscular imbalances are common in mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and can decrease performance and increase injuries. This study aims to investigate the effects of fixing muscular imbalances of MMA fighters. The experiment will consist of 20 MMA fighters assigned to either an intervention group or control group. The intervention group will receive an 8-week program targeting their muscular imbalances. Pre- and post-intervention measures will be assessed. This research highlights the importance of addressing muscular imbalances in MMA fighters to improve their overall performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Mock Codes, Emergent Scenarios, Nursing Confidence and Team Performance
- Kelsey LeeNursingUndergraduate Student
Critical care nurses specialize in caring for human responses to life-threatening problems. Nursing confidence in codes has shown direct correlation in improved patient outcomes, reduced time to compressions and adherence to American Heart Association guidelines. Currently, in a high-acuity critical care unit in Northern California, mock code scenarios and simulations are not a common practice. A quality improvement program is being developed to improve resuscitation efforts on this unit. It will include a self-assessment, mock codes and emergency scenario days. The goal is to increase nursing and staff confidence in resuscitation efforts, as well as improve team performance.
