"The All-American Boy": Ted Bendy as an Example of White Privilege and Toxic Masculinity
- Grace McKendryAnthropologyUndergraduate Student
Ted Bundy is one of the United States’ most infamous serial killers. He has been described as being charismatic and intelligent, despite the fact that he murdered dozens of women in the 1970s. Ted Bundy’s motivation for killing, and reactions to him, may reveal some potentially problematic aspects about what mainstream society in the United States values. A trend that made itself apparent was the idea of Ted Bundy being a charming and intelligent person being a myth created by Bundy himself. This myth was made popular by other writers and journalists over the last 30 years.
"Think of the Children!": Understanding Parental and Community Opposition to Critical Race Theory in Schools
Daniela Tierra, Sociology Graduate Student
College of Arts, Humanities & Social SciencesSince 2020, opposition to Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools has been a highly controversial topic. The heated topic and buzzwords on social media and conservative news media look dramatically different than the CRT of academic disciplines. This begs the question, what do opponents of CRT believe it to be, and why are they opposed to it? This research utilizes open-ended qualitative interviews to uncover what opponents of CRT believe it to be and why people are opposed to it.

All students indicated that support of their professional tool kit was "very important" to "important." Post-course assessment indicated that most engaged heavily in assignments supporting low confidence areas such as networking, translating their major skills and experiences for a job or internship search, and developing organizing systems for their job/internship search.

This project presents a modern method to preserve and study the past. 3D Technology is taking over current research in the archaeology field. Agisoft Photoscan is a 3D rendering software that has aided in this new methodology and form of inquiry. The basis of this project is to process field data from the Dos Hombres to Gran Cacao Archaeological Project and configure a 3D model of excavation sites from the 2017 field season. The objective of this project is to provide a method to analysis and conserve archaeological artifacts, sites, and features. As a result of this research, a model will be produced to facilitate access to the archaeological project without being physically present.

A Glimpse into the Student Study Abroad Perspective
- Denise MaciasSociologyUndergraduate Student
Over 300,000 U.S. students studied abroad in the academic year 2015-2016, and the number is growing. (NAFSA) To understand the experiences of students who study internationally during their college education, I conducted semi-structured interviews with HSU students who studied abroad in the last three years. With my study, I wanted to understand how various aspects of study abroad programs, like housing, length, community interactions, and so forth, impact the student’s enjoyment of their program. My aim is to provide feedback for study abroad leaders to create meaningful programs for students.

- Aaron DonaldsonCommunicationFaculty
In 1947, at the West Point Military Academy, the first ever National Debate Championship pitted dozens of students from numerous colleges and universities across America against each other in a contest of research, notation, listening skills, and advocacy. Every year since schools world-wide have utilized "competitive forensics" to develop these crucial capabilities. Starting in 1955, HSU has one of America's best-known programs, yet few at HSU know much about it - this presentation will explore the justification, founding, history, methodologies and current status of this nationally-recognized program.
