Decolonizing Mentorship Programs

In the past, efforts to create mentorship programs have been unsuccessful due to the tendency to place the needs of mentors before individuals who are being mentored. The purpose of this project was to lessen the paternalism in mentorship programs by providing space to discuss objectives and barriers for students who may then participate as mentees. Six open ended questions were designed in an effort to include student’s ideas on how to engage with student partners and provide a safe learning environment. Following the focus group, the information will be analyzed and delivered to mentors in the form of a powerpoint. This analysis will also be available to students for review and critique.

Organic Guru is an organic food company and sustainable village. The food company replaces Sysco, and US Foods as a restaurant and small market supply, supplying Humboldt's restaurants, schools and general population with organic food. The profits in turn support a sustainable/ecovillage which provide quality sustainable housing such as tee pee's, yurts, for either permeant or transitional housing. allowing for a large segment of the population to have food shelter clothing and income. We also have planned to create a product line of food to sell at the retail stores, and restaurants, such as kombucha, teas, superfood cookies, pasta sauces. Like Newmans own.

Using data collected in 2017 from student consumers of the Humboldt State University (HSU) Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC), a strength and needs assessment of their program was conducted. This project explored the personal and academic experiences of students who are disabled at HSU and utilize SDRC services. The goal of this project was to identify the strengths of the SDRC and to make recommendations for what could be improved upon, specifically in terms of access to resources and support.
Load Forcasting in Humboldt County

The objective of our project is the prediction of the electric power usage in Humboldt County in 2017. Load is the amount of power that is being drawn from the electrical grid due to consumer, industrial, and governmental practices. Forecasting load is used to predict future electrical power that is required to meet the short term or long term demand. We have created a linear regression analysis with a moving window to predict energy use for the next hour. Our work is a mathematical model that uses past data to achieve an efficient strategy for forecasting electricity loads.

The North Coast Arts Integration Project (NCAIP) is a four-year federally funded project that seeks to integrate and strengthen arts instruction in eight rural elementary and middle schools with the goal of improving student academic performance, reasoning skills, creative thinking and engagement. NCAIP increases student exposure to the arts through field trips and in-school performances by local, national and international performing artists. In addition, our project builds community bridges by partnering teachers with local teaching artists and other local arts institutions. We will share examples of an arts integrated lesson and provide a chance for you to have a short arts experience.

Humboldt State University current HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system relies on the use of natural gas boilers. This project proposes to switch HSU's current HVAC system to electric air source heat pumps. Unlike natural gas broilers, electric heat pumps do not burn fuel onsite to generate and move heat. Transitioning building heating systems from natural gas to electrically powered systems would reduce the GHG emissions for HSU. In the HSU Climate Action Plan, it was reported that natural gas usage contributed to at least 60% of HSU’s 2014 carbon emissions.

College students are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and they are encouraged to get screened regularly. In the fall of 2017 we implemented a peer to peer model to provide reproductive health consultations. Evaluation of the program in 2017 showed it was effective and there was a high satisfaction rate among patients who participated in the program. In the fall of 2018 we had a new set of four peer health educators (PHEs) who were trained to provide asymptomatic STI screenings and birth control consults in clinic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the demand, utilization, and cost of the program during fall 2018 semester.

This is a video showcase by students in ITS Media Production called "Ten Plus." Ten Plus means that more than one in ten students on the HSU campus has a disability and requires some form of accommodation. These videos aim to build awareness as to what is currently being done and what steps we need to take in order to create accessibility on this campus through the use of Universal Design, accessible documents and more. It includes interviews by faculty, students and staff who are familiar with these issues and work with them everyday. This project is funded through the GI 2025. Its purpose is to "remove obstacles and support innovation to increase student success in graduating on time!
Lumbar Discectomy - Treatment - Recover- Rehabilitation Programing

In the Department of Kinesiology we are required to complete a research project in our senior year about any topic in our field. I chose to research treatments for herniated discs and sciatic pain since back pain is highly prevalent in society. I was curious about the various treatment options, complementary and alternative medicine, and psychological factors that affect recovery outcomes. My aim was to present a well rounded perspective in treating back pain and gain knowledge around this topic as I pursue a graduate degree in physical therapy after I graduate.
