Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and Different Recovery Methods for Decreasing DOMS
- Blaine Edward WestKinesiologyUndergraduate Student
- Abby MillerKinesiologyUndergraduate Student
In this fictional study, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is explained, and different recovery methods are investigated in order to research the decreasing effects of DOMS. Methods that are explored include different types of cool down recoveries such as a cool down with static stretching, a cool down with a combination of static stretching and foam rolling (a type of massage), or no cooldown performed at all. This study demonstrates how a combination of static stretching and foam rolling could be major factors in decreasing the effects of DOMS and perceived effects of DOMS. This presentation is in regards to the KINS 379 class assignment.
Deliberative Democracy for Climate Resilience: Can this Make a Difference?
- Mustafa KhanPolitical ScienceUndergraduate Student
Considering how climate change is an ongoing issue, the basis of the project will explore the concept of deliberative democracy and it's potential effects on climate resilience. Deliberative democracy essentially focuses on how citizens engage with issues and the deliberation aspect of it can help make otherwise complicated political issues easier to comprehend. The research for this project will include a forum on this topic at HSU as well as an analysis of countries employing this strategy and its effectiveness.
Delirium at end of life: Improving outcomes
- Hilary BagnellNursingUndergraduate Student
Terminal delirium is a common condition seen in the hospice setting. Unlike delirium, terminal delirium is usually not reversible. It manifests in the final days or weeks of life and typically causes distress and safety issues for caregivers and patients. Caregivers depend on nurses to educate them on what to expect as their loved one declines. Since terminal delirium is a common occurrence, preparing these caregivers ahead of time is essential. Since terminal agitation can be difficult to assess, organizations may adopt an assessment tool, training nurses on its use. Organizations may also create a nurse-driven protocol that utilizes evidence-based interventions.

Heavy metal contamination of soils and waterways due to industrial processes, such as mining, continues to be a problem in the U.S., such as Flint Michigan. Microbial surface layers (S-layers) have shown promise for binding and sequestering heavy metals. Modifications to the S-later protein (RsaA), in C. vibrioides, could increase this efficiency. Our modified strains absorbed more lead per cell mass. Strains HCm 021, 027, 028 absorbed 197.78 ±2.14, 231.32 ±3.10, and 168.69 ±22.65 (ppm Pb+2/g cells) versus 90.55 +/- 1.07 (ppm/g) for the wild-type. Future goals of this project include determining association constants of lead to cells, and construction of a bioremediation filter.
Depressive Symptomology Mediates the Relationship Between Self-stigma and Mental Health Help-seeking Intention

Undergraduate students (N=712) completed an online survey about help-seeking, stigma, and depression symptomatology. Mental health self-stigma was found to partially mediate the relationship between depression and help-seeking intentions, controlling for gender. This study suggests that the nature of depression itself may present a barrier to help-seeking, adding important context to outreach efforts on campuses.
Design of a ChiA surface expression system for enhanced biofuel feedstocks.
- Kristian BowmanBiologyUndergraduate Student
The ChiA protein from Serratia marcescens is responsible for the hydrolysis of 1,4 glycosidic bonds in N-acetyl-glucosamine chains, that comprise chitin. Chitin, being the second most abundant polymer, has untouched potential as a source for biofuel feedstocks. Here we aim to enhance chitinase activity through displaying the ChiA on the surface layer proteins (S-layers) of Caulobacter vibrioides. The S-layer of C. vibrioides is a nanometer scale hexagonal 2-D crystalline lattice composed of a single protein, RsaA, and covers the entire surface of the organism. In this study, the chiA gene isolated from S. marcescens was designed and amplified for expression in the C. vibrioides S-layer.
Design of Possible Organic Photovoltaic Compounds and Their Initial Computational Assessment
- Albert Ochoa CastilloChemistryUndergraduate Student
The excessive use of fossil fuels has surged the need for alternative energy sources, such as solar energy. Here, possible organic photovoltaic (OPV) compounds were designed and their initial computational assessment was done. Density Functional Theory was used to calculate the HOMO-LUMO gap of the 26 compounds designed. Semiconductors such as naphthalene, 1,1’-biphenyl, and ɑ-septithiophene were used as the backbone and the main electron-withdrawing group (EWG) used was thien[3,4-c] [1,2,5]thiadiazole-2-sIV(8CI,9CI), among other thieno-thiadiazole derivatives.
Designing a Measure of Academic Help Seeking
- Danielle SiegelPsychologyUndergraduate Student
- Henry PantiPsychologyUndergraduate Student
- Christopher MorenoPsychology
Existing studies on academic help seeking suggest that students only seek help if they are already academically confident. To examine these findings, The Humboldt Academic Help Seeking Scale (HAHSS) was developed in order to assess student's academic help seeking motivations and behaviors. The HAHSS was found to be reliable, and provided evidence for validity with criterion, convergent, and discriminant measures. It was also found that high scores on the HAHSS were significantly correlated with higher grade point averages. Real-world applications are discussed, such as implementing more effective online help programs in order to aid students intimidated by seeking in-person help.
