Giant Serpents Of Humboldt

College of Arts, Humanities & Social SciencesMy topic is a history of giant serpent folklore within Humboldt county and how and why it evolved. Covering how and why the folklore formed in the first place, and how and why has the folklore changed throughout time. This includes how it relates to other serpent folklore and why it is special and unique compared to different regions' folklore on serpents. To support my topic I am trying to briefly touch on why are serpents/snakes are so prevalent in folklore, what makes Humboldt a likely place for such a deep serpent mythos, what real life creatures sparked inspiration

This presentation visually highlights the critical communication skills that employers are looking for in college graduates and describes how these skills may be demonstrated by students in the Communication 490 course taught by Dr. Reitzel. Two viewpoints are highlighted: the Communication student's perspective completing the Capstone Experience course activities and the Communication faculty member's perspective in terms of addressing and achieving the National Communication Association's Learning Outcomes in Communication.
Graphene Batteries: A Step Toward More Efficient Energy Storage

The basis of this research consists of the use of graphene and supercapacitor energy storage as a more energy efficient and environmentally conscious alternative to traditional lithium ion batteries. This will also cover the government policies that could potentially fund the research, development, and integration of graphene based supercapacitors in the energy market. This energy market currently includes standard fossil fuel based energy as well as renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Although renewable energy options have grown in popularity and commercial availability, the main issue with these sources is storage, and graphene based batteries could remedy this problem.
Greenway Partners: A Residency for HSU Graduates in Downtown Eureka

In growing need to accommodate graduate students' housing issues from Humboldt State University as well as the need for urban revitalization projects in Old Town Eureka, ENST seniors James Bradas and Rebecca Ron partnered with Greenway Partners: an Arcata-based engineering design, consultancy, and facilitation firm to continue with the lead on this project. Through research within the Old Town quarter of Eureka, research in city, county, and state municipal code, and using the lived experiences of the Humboldt State domestic experience with the current housing market, a conceptual framework grew from a critical understanding about the community, place, and placement of prospective housing.
Grieg Piano Sonata in E minor

Grieg wrote his only piano sonata early in his life, when he was still learning how to be a composer. It is an imperfect work, but very emotional and passionate. I play only the first movement, Allegro moderato.
Grow Gardens not Grass

My Environmental Studies Capstone experience has been through service learning at the Pacific Union Garden Project. Through this service learning I have partnered with a variety of elementary aged children and teachers to incorporate environmental education in a garden setting. The use of rainwater catchment systems, compost and worm bins have been used to educate children on the importance of water, soils, and the regenerative cycle of life. This project will show how children interact and gain skills in a garden and why school gardens are important to children's education as a starting point for environmental education inspiration.

The use of active learning approaches, which emphasize student-centered and collaborative learning, has been shown to improve learning outcomes and engagement. Project-based and experiential learning can equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply in real-world situations. This presentation will provide examples of successful implementations and discuss the challenges educators may face when moving towards a student-centered, knowledge-producing model.
