Amongst adolescents, school connectedness has been found to predict positive student wellbeing (i.e., self esteem and depression). The present study plans to replicate these result with college students, whom experience daily stress. For some students this daily stress includes acculturative stress (i.e., psychological process of adapting to a dominant group that differs from one's heritage), which is negatively associated with wellbeing. We will examine how school connectedness buffers this association.

The current study investigates how high or low consensus around a leader who holds a deviant or normative position influences individual attitudes, all contingent on the perceived group’s attitude towards said position. We hypothesized that exposure to a leader with a deviant position who was elected by a landslide (high consensus) vs. marginally (low consensus) will convert individual attitudes to align with the perceived group attitude, which is supportive of the deviant position.
Resilience, Protective Factors and Sustainability in Child Welfare Workers

The preliminary findings of this research highlight the resiliency, retention, and protective factors of Title IV-E child welfare workers. This study aims to better understand the relationship between the effects of working in a field with high exposure to vicarious trauma, and a social worker's own personal resiliency and coping strategies. The implications of our research suggest several ways agencies and educators can increase the well-being and sustainability of social workers. Improving the well-being of child welfare workers can have a substantial impact on the experiences and outcomes of children and families in our communities.
The Misrepresentation of Inclusivity

Humboldt State University’s students, faculty and staff aspire to be an inclusive and liberal school. However, this is not necessarily the reality that students, particularly students of color, have experienced attending school and living in this area. This study utilizes general inductive analysis that focuses on: How is diversity being represented in Humboldt County as reflected in local news sources and their comments sections? According to the data, there are certain aspects of the system that we can change to provide more support when students experience racialized violence. This project seeks to make recommendations for change in the public dialogue on diversity issues.
Humboldt Tenant Landlord Collaboration Assessment

The purpose of this research is to identify the effectiveness of the administered education Humboldt Tenant Landlord Collaboration (HTLC) is offering. Further, if this program has any strong points or gaps in its curriculum. There are benefits to this research, particularly participants will be continued agents of developing a robust community education program around renting in Humboldt County. The participants of this assessment will be voicing their opinions & helping to identify further supports that will help our community. With this, one may feel a sense of pride and connection to their place of residence. I will be presenting the findings of the HTLC assessment.
Equity Gaps Among Diverse CSU Student Groups

Crutchfield and Maguire (2018, 2019) completed basic needs assessments of the CSU system and data from those will be analyzed to explore equity gaps among diverse student groups reporting food and housing insecurity with focus on hours worked, and hours of familial obligations. A policy recommendation is for university volunteer and internship hours to count as an eligibility exemption for CalFresh .

This study outlines the results of a survey undertaken at Humboldt State University to examine factors that are associated with an undergraduate accounting student obtaining a job offer and passing the CPA exam. Undertaking relevant part-time work, academic performance and social
(extra-curricular) activities are significant factors leading to job offers prior to graduation, as well as success on the CPA exam. Participation in part-time professional work was not found to negatively affect students’ academic performance.
Influence of Exercise on Mood States: Comparing Yoga to Low-Impact Aerobics

This research focuses on the intersection between moderate exercise and mental well-being, comparing yoga and low impact aerobics college classes to determine which is most effective in their influence on moods. Profile of Mood States (POMS) and new General Self-efficacy (NGSE) scales are used to gather data over Fall semester 2020.

Sovereign Bodies Institute (SBI) maintains the largest and most comprehensive database of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in the US and Canada. Due to the high number of cases and the desire to have comprehensive information on each individual case, we were honored to work with SBI to compile case files for 107 MMIWG in Northern California. SBI will use this information to have a clearer picture of what is known, what is unknown, and what has been written about or publicly shared about each missing or murdered Indigenous women and girls in Northern California.

My community project is based on the need for a cohesive resource guide for pregnant and new parents attending Humboldt State University. The research was conducted on the resources and references for pregnant and new parents attending Humboldt State University. The project is a compilation of data addressing resources available for students experiencing pregnancy/parenthood while attending HSU. The aim of connecting students with resources is to help with retention as well as supporting their growing families.
